The United Kingdom's policy of militarizing the South Atlantic is evidenced by a new rotation of elite troops in the Malvina Islands, a sovereign Argentine territory illegally occupied since 1833.
The British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI) confirmed, through their social media channels, the relief of the Rotating Permanent Infantry Company (RIC). Company B of the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment, has officially assumed its role, replacing Company I of the 2nd Battalion, The Rifles ( 2 RIFLES ). This move, carried out under the Royal Irish Regiment's motto, "Faugh a Ballagh" ("Clear the Way"), ensures a consistent and highly capable military presence in the archipelago.
The handover comes immediately after the culmination of the intense military exercise "ExCape Sword" (October 6-14), the fifth large-scale exercise documented so far in 2025. These maneuvers, which included live-fire exercises, amphibious operations, the deployment of paratroopers, and the use of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, are part of a systematic process of strengthening British control, adding to the "Marinization" and "Cape Kukri III" exercises previously conducted.
Sustained violation of UN resolutions
The continuation of these deployments and intensive military exercises constitutes a flagrant and repeated violation of paragraph 4 of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 31/49 , adopted in 1976. This resolution "urges both parties to refrain from taking decisions which would entail unilateral changes to the situation" while seeking a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute. The rotating deployment of units such as the Gurkhas or, now, the Royal Irish Regiment, and the intensification of war games are, in effect, a "unilateral change to the situation."
The British strategy is clear: to consolidate their military occupation, exploit natural resources, and build a logistical network that extends their reach in the South Atlantic to Antarctica.

Recent air movements, such as the overflight of a British Antarctic Survey (BAS) aircraft over regional airspace, and the logistical stops of the A400M Atlas military transport in neighboring countries, demonstrate this power projection policy.
Argentina's official silence: a strategic error
Faced with this military escalation and the continued violation of UN resolutions, the response of the Argentine government under President Javier Milei remains inaction. Unlike previous administrations that formally condemned these maneuvers, the current silence is interpreted as a dangerous indifference that weakens the claim to national sovereignty and the cause of regional demilitarization.
The permanent presence of systems like the RBS 70 and rapid deployment units, operating under the command of the BFSAI, demands a strong diplomatic response. The Argentine State must resume its active denunciation and demand an end to the unilateral modifications imposed by the occupying power, in compliance with international law .
