Yesterday, Wednesday, August 28, “the sessions of the National Council on Affairs Relating to the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the Corresponding Maritime and Insular Spaces were resumed, with the greeting of the President of the Nation, Javier Milei, and the presence of authorities from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities designated by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the Council members and the government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands.”
This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of the Nation headed by Chancellor Diana Mondino, through Press Information No. 427/24 .
The meeting was headed by the Chancellor herself and by the Secretary for the Malvinas, Antarctica, Oceanic Policy and the South Atlantic, Ambassador Paola Di Chiaro . Attending were members appointed by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation, Senator María Eugenia Duré , Senator Pablo Blanco, Senator Daniel Bensusán, Deputy María Fernanda Araujo and Deputy Héctor Stefani . As well as the Counselors appointed by Ministerial Resolution 348/2024 Marcelo Kohen and Juan Sola, as specialists in International Law; Ambassador Fernando Petrella , Ambassador Archibaldo Lanús and Admiral VGM Daniel Martín as representatives of the academic and scientific sector with a recognized track record in the matter; and VGM Mr. Adolfo Schweighofer , as representative of the Malvinas Ex-Combatants and at the request of numerous associations throughout the country. Andrés Dachary also participated, representing the Governor of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands.
The list, which is unknown according to the selection criteria, left out the representatives of the Centro de Excombatientes Islas Malvinas de la Plata (CECIM) and the specialist in International Law, teacher and professor Armando Abruza, with a mandate until December 2025. The Foreign Ministry did not invite them or give them notice of the reasons why they were not invited.
The Council was created by Law 27,558 , on August 25, 2020 by the government of Alberto Fernández, and its purpose, as established in its third article: a) Contribute to generating the political and social consensus necessary for (b) To collaborate in the elaboration of the basis for the Argentine position in the sovereignty dispute in its geographic, environmental, historical, legal and political aspects; (c) To propose and carry out teaching and research activities that provide knowledge to the Argentine people about the justice of the claim to the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgias, South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding Maritime and Insular Spaces; (d) To carry out actions aimed at collaborating in the dissemination and promotion of Argentine rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias, South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding Maritime and Insular Spaces, at the regional and global level; and e) Propose strategies that contribute to the permanent recognition of Malvinas War Veterans and those fallen in combat and their families."
In any case, despite the breadth of its objectives, from its creation until December 10, 2023, the date on which Alberto Fernández left the office of President; this National Council that was born with much publicity and expectations, did not generate a single important event in the matter. Even less " to design and implement State policies that aim to make effective the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands." On the contrary, it stood out for the secrecy of the issues discussed and for the absolute absence regarding the British colonial advance in the Malvinas, as well as regarding the reprehensible and reprehensible actions that the British embassy in Argentina carries out, totally contrary to national interests.
