The presence of the ship in the Port of Montevideo violates Treaties between Uruguay and Argentina and declarations of CELAC.

Opening the 2024-2025 Antarctic season, the British scientific icebreaker ship RRS Sir David Attenborough operated by the British Antarctic Survey , entered the Río de La Plata yesterday; and at 11 a.m., it moored in the port of Montevideo.

This can be seen by accessing the satellite tracking website www.marinetraffic.com , which provides precise data on the vessel, its journey starting in the port of Harwich - in the United Kingdom -, the stops on the Portuguese island of Madeira and then in the port of Recife in Brazil, and now in Montevideo.

The presence of a British ship in the Uruguayan capital, with a patent and flag of the British colony that usurps the Malvinas Islands from Argentina, is not something that should be minimized, when what is at stake is the defense of Argentine sovereign rights over the southern territories.

Inaction, disinterest, indifference or, worse still, allowing the British to advance as if encouraging them to consolidate their colonial position in the South Atlantic, on the part of the National Government and specifically the Foreign Ministry, is at the other extreme of the support of our claim. Even less so as an attitude towards the governments and nations of the world that historically supported and continue to support the Argentine position in the United Nations.

As described in a recent article by Dr. César Lerena , Argentina’s leading expert on the South Atlantic and Fisheries, the Sir David Attenborough enters the port of Montevideo under the Malvinas flag, within an area “governed by the Treaty of the River Plate signed by Argentina and Uruguay in 1973/74; and without Argentina having been informed in accordance with Decree 256/10” . And furthermore, “violating the Declaration of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) of 2011 on Argentine rights in the Malvinas, which prohibited all logistics to vessels under the Malvinas flag, without even a declaration of repudiation from the Foreign Ministry”.
