Fishing plundering in the South Atlantic sparked a battle between two Spanish ships

The waters of the South Atlantic, between the parallels 45°S and 47°S, which border the limits of Argentine jurisdiction, reflect the maritime conflict over the resource's productivity, with a collision reported between the Galician fishing vessels Manuel Ángel Nores and Playa da Cativa.

The Playa da Cativa ship, based in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Argentine platform , with depths of less than 200 meters, has become a meeting point for vessels of various nationalities , which operate in extremely crowded conditions. Meanwhile, excessive competition for resources has led to dangerous situations , where collisions and boardings are increasingly common.

This time, the events occurred between the Galician fishing vessels Manuel Ángel Nores and Playa da Cativa , both based in Montevideo , Uruguay , illustrating the precariousness of fishing activity in this region.

According to industry reports, the Manuel Ángel Nores ran over the Playa da Cativa 's trawl gates, causing severe damage to its winches and forcing its crew to return to port for repairs .

In contrast, the Manuel Ángel Nores continued to operate without major setbacks , evidencing a system that seems to favor impunity .

This incident is not an isolated case . The waters outside the 200-mile mark have become a real fishing " war zone ." A real battlefield , where the lack of regulation and control allows international fishing fleets to compete fiercely for the Illex argentinus squid .

In 2019 , the Vigo-based fishing vessel Pesca Vaqueiro collided with the Chinese jigger Zhong Yuan Yu 11 , leading to the evacuation of the Asian crew in the middle of the ocean . More recently, in 2023 , the Playa Pesmar Uno suffered a similar accident with another vessel of Asian origin, forcing it to seek refuge in a Uruguayan port .

It is estimated that dozens of unreported incidents occur in this area every month .
