The UN Secretary General urges the world to be concerned about the deterioration of Antarctica

In a statement, issued during his second day of visit to the Antarctic territory controlled by Chile, the Portuguese diplomat denounced, once again, that global warming is awakening this “sleeping giant” through a dangerous nightmare for the future called “ climate chaos.”

“Pollution from fossil fuels is warming our planet, unleashing climate anarchy in Antarctica,” he stated from King George Island, where he has been since yesterday in the company of the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric.

He added that the Southern Ocean has taken most of the “heat of global warming.”

Guterres took the opportunity to reiterate his call to leaders attending the COP28 climate summit in Dubai next week to “act now to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, protect people from climate chaos and end the era of fossil fuels.”
