The EU and British Colonialism: A map claimed Argentine sovereignty over the Malvina Islands

A recent incident involving the European People's Party (EPP) has revived the debate on the sovereignty of the Malvina Islands on social media. The publication of a map showing the Malvina Islands as part of Argentina generated all kinds of comments and another opportunity to highlight the truth: "The Malvinas are and will be Argentine."

On the map, the Malvina Islands appeared in blue, alongside Argentina, while the United Kingdom was shown in grey.

In an image shared to celebrate the creation of the “largest free trade zone in the world” following the completion of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, the Malvina Islands appeared in blue alongside Argentina , while the United Kingdom was in grey.

Social media users were quick to analyse the implications of a European party graphically recognising Argentine sovereignty over a territory usurped by British pirates since 1833 .

The EPP , the largest party in the European Parliament , shared the image on social media highlighting the creation of the “ largest free trade zone in the world ” after concluding negotiations with several countries , including Argentina .

The inclusion of the islands on the EPP map sparked celebration among Internet users as it represented a recognition of Argentine sovereignty , but the party later denied it . They later published another version where the islands appear in grey , aligning themselves with the British colonialist position .

Some even went so far as to suspect that the party was trying to “ hedge its bets ” after establishing an agreement involving Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.

The EPP , following the wave of reactions for and against , issued a correction where the Malvina Islands returned to the grey category , supporting the imperialist position of the usurpers of the South Atlantic .

However, this change could not hide the fact that the mention of the Malvinas in a context that favours Argentina resonates as a growing legitimisation of the sovereign claim over the region illegitimately occupied by Great Britain .

At the same time, within the framework of the new agreement , important commercial opportunities are opening up between the EU and South America , as well as a unique opportunity for Argentina to continue to claim sovereignty over the Malvina Islands and the southern archipelagos .

This is taking into account that the agreement not only establishes a commercial alliance , but also raises the possibility of a deeper dialogue on justice and equity in matters of territorial sovereignty , as well as the untimeliness of colonialist regimes that violate the rights of the true owners of the land.
