World powers set their sights on Punta Arenas and the Strait of Magellan

Global attention is focused on Punta Arenas and the Strait of Magellan. The US and China are competing for leadership and these maritime routes are gaining importance in light of the difficulties in the Suez and Panama canals. In addition, the development of Green Hydrogen on the shores of the Strait could mark another advantage over Argentina.

The Strait of Magellan arouses the interest of the powers and is seen as an area of geopolitical contention.

The Chilean port of Punta Arenas and the Strait of Magellan are in the sights of world powers due to the navigational complications currently posed by the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal . At the same time, renewable energy exploitation projects pose another aspect that positions Chile in full competition and at a relative advantage over our country .

The United States and China intend to advance maritime trade through the route that links the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the South Atlantic , and for this reason, international media began to highlight the geopolitical importance of the southern region and the interest of world powers to have influence in the area.

A relevant factor lies in the feasibility of developing Green Hydrogen , in the vicinity of the San Gregorio ranch - on the northern coast of the Strait of Magellan - , an issue that is even promoted (at least in the debate) by the Government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina .

In this context, TRT Español , the Spanish-speaking version of the international signal of TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) , highlights that “ the world sets its eyes on the Strait of Magellan and Punta Arenas, while the effects of climate change and conflicts on other trade routes make this maritime route take on new relevance .”

The United States and China are already fighting for this strategic point that connects the Pacific with the Atlantic, but the competition is not only about the transit of ships: green hydrogen becomes the real treasure ,” the media outlet adds.

It is known that Chile has a great advantage regarding the development of maritime trade and Antarctic activities if we compare it with the work and international relations of Argentina in the far south , where despite the fact that the city of Ushuaia is in an unbeatable position facing the white continent, Punta Arenas monopolizes most of the activity .

Just as Argentina has lost ground as a logistics hub , it could also lose the opportunity to be a pioneer in renewable energy and Green Hydrogen .

With a potential of $112 billion by 2030, Chile could become a leader in the production of this renewable energy thanks to the Patagonian winds. However, the big question is: are Chilean ports ready to handle the massive increase in maritime traffic and energy development? ” says TRT Español .

The race has begun and world powers are already preparing for the future. What role will Chile play in this new era? ” the press asks, to which we should also ask ourselves : what viable projects does Argentina have on its agenda so as not to be completely relegated in terms of international maritime trade in this area, but also in terms of international relations and the development of Antarctic activities?

It is worth saying that in this context , the relationship of mutual support between the British usurpers of the Malvinas Islands and the country of Chile is also not minor, which is presented as an alliance against Argentine interests in the white continent and over sovereignty in the South Atlantic .
