Javier Milei's government is moving forward with the transfer of the Argentine embassy in Israel, from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The decision carries strong political weight because it is a territory in dispute with Palestine and United Nations resolutions urge avoiding such recognition.

"I am sure that we will soon see the new Argentine embassy in Jerusalem, the eternal capital of Israel," wrote Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz after a meeting with the Argentine ambassador, Rabbi Shimon Wahnish.

This generates a concern that runs through the corridors of the Foreign Ministry and is related to the adverse effects that this and other foreign policy decisions may have on the historic claim for the Malvinas .  "The ideologization of the government's foreign policy can complicate the claim for sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands," warned a diplomatic source.

To move forward with the transfer of the embassy is to contradict what Mondino herself said in the Senate, where she was harshly crossed by the radical senator Martín Lousteau.

Last week, Diana Mondino was at the Special Committee on Decolonization of the United Nations General Assembly where a new resolution was adopted that reiterates the call to the United Kingdom and Argentina to "resume bilateral negotiations to find, as soon as possible, possible, a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands, the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces.

The resolution was adopted by consensus of all the countries that make up the Committee and the government highlighted the broad international support, something that has happened for decades. However, diplomatic sources recognize that some of the foreign policy decisions they want to implement could impact the support that is great today.

According to diplomatic sources, one of the decisions that could alter the will of the Decolonization Committee is the transfer of the Argentine embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.  According to high diplomatic sources, this is "what works most against us because the Committee is strongly pro-Palestinian." For the diplomats who work closely with the issue, this meeting was "a warning: next year if we continue like this we could even lose because of the 24 you have several Arab countries, Russia, China, Cuba and Venezuela."

"They put the country's security at risk because of a personal whim of the President. And we have a chancellor who, in order to remain in office, endorses what no other chancellor in the world would accept out of common sense," they emphasize.

Another point that some believe could influence is the position against the 2030 Agenda orchestrated by lawyer Úrsula Basset by order of Karina Milei and Santiago Caputo, which has already begun to be seen in the votes in the OAS, as LPO revealed exclusively.

In this case there are two facets. The first is the isolation in the fulfillment of international commitments that Argentina subscribes to and due to which it may miss out on business opportunities with important countries such as the United States, Germany and France, especially with regard to renewable energies and the exploitation of lithium.

And the second point is that everything that is related to climate change is of interest to Caribbean countries that suffer natural catastrophes and see in these global pacts the possibility of accessing financing lines. "If you block issues of importance to them all the time, don't be surprised if tomorrow they vote against the Malvinas in retaliation," says a source concerned about the issue.

The anger of important diplomats within the ministry led by Mondino is that "the chancellery is guided by ideologues and not by professionals."

"Now there are people from the PRO and the UCR who are starting to hit the Secretary of Economic Relations, Marcelo Cima and the Vice Chancellor, Leopoldo Sahores. They are the most complicated along with Mariana Plaza, the ambassador in the United Kingdom who is not doing any management through the Malvinas," they indicated.
