From left to right: the Secretary of Malvinas Paola Di Chiaro, the Argentine ambassador to the UN Ricardo Lagorio, the chancellor Diana Mondino and the vice-governor of Tierra del Fuego, Mónica Urquiza at the last meeting of the Decolonization Committee.

The Malvinas cause has become a problem for Diana Mondino's management. The evident abandonment of the intensity of the claim by the government and some foreign policy decisions and alignments threatens to lose historical support.

As La Política On Line revealed, the last summit of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) was about to put the issue to a vote, but at the last minute a consensus document was reached.

However, there are countries that made their position known, asked to speak and distanced themselves. There would be three reasons : the change in Argentine foreign policy, the anti-Agenda 2030 stance that angers Caribbean countries that suffer from climate change and the alignment with Israel, especially the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem, which alienates Arab countries. .

In this context, Mondino says that Lagorio failed to obtain support in the C24 and assures that he did not fulfill what he had promised during the campaign to be appointed Ambassador in New York.

For his part, the ambassador responds that the Foreign Ministry is to blame because they do not "give him figurines to change in the United Nations" and Milei's fight against everyone makes his multilateral work impossible.

"There is a fight with the Arabs and several Middle Eastern countries withdraw our support, there is a fight with the neighboring countries and they exclude the Malvinas issue from the Mercosur declaration, they fight in the OAS over climate change and - as a reaction - the Caribbean players play for the United Kingdom. It's impossible to do my job well. Your coach scores goals for the opposition," sources close to the ambassador said.

In this framework, Lagorio wrote in a secret cable addressed to Mondino where he maintains that "several countries decreased their level of support due to Argentine foreign policy decisions on other issues that directly affect them."

There is a fight with the Arabs and several Middle Eastern countries withdraw our support, there is a fight with the neighboring countries and they exclude the Malvinas issue from the Mercosur declaration, they fight in the OAS over climate change and - as a reaction - the Caribbean people They play for the United Kingdom. This is impossible to do my job well. Your coach scores the goals for the opponents.

In parallel with the passing of bills between Buenos Aires and its representative at the UN, it is accompanied by efficient management by the United Kingdom that sent the Kelpers legislators to speak at C24 as petitioners and representatives of the Malvinas. Lagorio blames Mondino for this for speaking in the campaign in favor of the islanders by stating that "they must be listened to."

Among the Arab countries that changed their position is Syria (a country that historically supports the Argentine claim) which refused to support Argentina in the Malvinas because the Milei government attacks Palestine "worse than the Israeli invaders themselves."

A diplomatic source working on the issue explained that "in Africa, Sierra Leone broke the historic consensus in the African Union and defended the right to self-determination of the islanders. Antigua and Barbuda broke the Caricom consensus by asking for self-determination of the islanders. For the first time since its creation, Celac did not support Argentina as a regional group. The same happened with Mercosur.

This source continues: "East Timor threatened to add the word 'wishes' of the Kelpers to the declaration and stated that no solution could be reached against the will of the islanders. Fiji maintained that in the 'Malvina Islands' the 'people' were already had decided his destiny but unfortunately Argentina ignores his wishes.

"All these facts show that foreign policy for the Malvinas is leaking everywhere," he adds.

Now Mondino wants Lagorio to be the scapegoat for the failure of these negotiations and reminds his people that Lagorio was a sciolist.

However, the ambassador no longer hides his anger and tells people he trusts: "If I were the chancellor, these things would not happen. Diplomacy is an art that should be in the hands of diplomats. In the multilateral world, improvisations are paid dearly.
