The General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), endorsed this Friday, during the last plenary meeting held in Paraguay; the Argentine position regarding the Malvinas and declared “the need for the governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to begin, as soon as possible, negotiations on the sovereignty dispute, with the aim of finding a solution.” peacefully to this protracted controversy.”
The Declaration of the OAS General Assembly was unanimous and is in effect a strong gesture of support for Argentina and Great Britain to find spaces for dialogue to settle the dispute.
Among the countries that supported the Argentine position during their interventions were “the delegations of Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Panama, Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Chile, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, the Secretary General of the OAS and Uruguay,” according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
In turn, Honduras, “underlined the support of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) on this issue; and the Bolivian delegation referred to the support expressed by the Group of 77 and China.”
In the midst of the diplomatic quagmire that Argentina is going through with various countries and the questions regarding Foreign Minister Diana Mondino , the head of the San Martín Palace managed to bring strong support from the organization from Paraguay.
“Supported by the unanimous sentiment of the Argentine people, I want to highlight the historical solidarity of the American continent and thank the permanent support for the Malvinas Question. The passage of time has not eroded the legitimacy of our demand,” he stressed.
“None of the resolutions on the Malvinas Question adopted by the United Nations have ever included any reference to self-determination,” said Mondino, while stressing that Argentina is not indifferent to the interests of the islanders.
“We reiterate the call that the @OAS_oficial has always made, for the situation of the Malvinas Islands to be resolved through negotiation; a peaceful solution to the dispute.
