Driven by the mayor of the Australian city of Hobart, Anna Reynolds , a virtual meeting was held this Wednesday 25 with mayors and representatives of Antarctic cities of Punta Arenas (Chile), Christchurch (New Zealand), Cape Town (South Africa); and Ushuaia (Argentina) in which its mayor, Walter Vuoto, participated.

During the one-hour meeting, the four cities addressed various topics of common interest and explored the possibility of developing joint initiatives that would benefit them in terms of nature conservation and a sustainable economy. It became clear that the strategic importance of the Port of Ushuaia is not just a local slogan, but a reality recognized by the major powers of the Southern Hemisphere.
Ushuaia as a global hub for science and tourism
At the conference, Ushuaia positioned itself as the leading departure port for Antarctic cruises, offering its expertise to lead in responsible tourism standards and strengthen scientific research. The initiative aims to create an entity that unifies common tasks, transforming these cities into hubs of conservation and sustainability.
However, this international positioning contrasts with the internal institutional reality: because while the municipality projects itself as a global actor, the provincial government has allowed the operational management of the port to be taken over by a national intervention.
It is paradoxical that the Municipality of Ushuaia is working on twinning agreements with Hobart to manage protected natural areas, while the Melella administration could not even prove the federal registration of its lawyers to defend the port when they sought legal assistance from Judge Federico.
