The British contest that exposes Argentina's lack of response to the Malvinas

By inviting university students from Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to travel to the islands, the British government launched the sixth edition of the "Getting to Know My Malvina Islands Neighbors" competition. They are attempting to legitimize the occupation by recruiting "propagandists," amidst the silence of the Argentine authorities and academic community.

The British government, through its embassy in Argentina, has launched a new, sixth edition of the " Getting to Know My Malvina Islands Neighbors " competition for university students. The initiative promotes a controversial seven-day cultural exchange with the settlers established in Argentine territory.

The contest invites university students from Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to create a one-minute video in English answering the question , "Why would I like to meet my neighbors in the Malvina Islands?" The winner will receive a one-week, all-expenses-covered trip to the islands.

Winners of previous competitions, during the month of January in the Malvinas.

From the British government's perspective, this competition seeks to strengthen cultural ties and mutual understanding in the region. However, for those who defend Argentine sovereignty over the Malvina Islands, the initiative is a clear "soft power" strategy seeking to legitimize the British occupation, symbolically and through the media. By referring to the inhabitants as "neighbors" and the archipelago as the "Malvinas," the United Kingdom seeks to consolidate its control over the territory and project an image of normalcy and good neighborliness.

The contest rules stipulate that winners must be active on social media and willing to share their experiences . This requirement makes the students propagandists of the British narrative , a key objective in the de-Malvinization campaign the United Kingdom has implemented over the years.

The worrying official silence

Despite repeated British provocations, a notable lack of official response from the Argentine authorities is increasingly evident.

Unlike previous years, when the Foreign Ministry issued statements of condemnation, there have been no recent pronouncements from the national government, the Tierra del Fuego government (the province to which the islands belong), the university sector, or the National Congress. This silence contrasts with previous positions, such as that of 2022, when the Argentine government expressed a "categorical rejection" of the contest, calling it an "activity that only seeks to reflect the British occupation of the Malvina Islands." The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) also expressed its support, having requested the British Embassy in 2019 to remove all mention of the university from its promotion of the competition.

The lack of a strong response from government and academic bodies is particularly worrying, as it validates, by omission, the British narrative and allows the competition to proceed without the expected opposition from the Argentine state.
