Kast: The dangerous anti-Argentine nationalism of the Chilean right-winger

Javier Milei's celebration of the very likely victory of the Chilean right-winger José Kast ignores his dangerous anti-Argentine nationalism, which accuses Argentina of stealing territory and threatens our sovereignty in Patagonia and Antarctica.

José Antonio Kast will face the communist official Jeannette Jara in the second round on December 14.

The recent cordial communication between President Javier Milei and Chilean presidential candidate José Antonio Kast has created an illusion of a strategic alliance that could prove deeply misleading for Argentine interests.

Behind the flag emojis and promises of "economic progress" lies an uncomfortable and dangerous reality: Kast represents a Chilean nationalist movement that has historically expressed an openly anti-Argentine stance, particularly regarding territorial sovereignty.

This position is not a minor detail or a campaign anecdote, but a central element of his political ideology that Argentina cannot afford to ignore in its euphoria for finding ideological allies.

The evidence regarding Kast's thinking is compelling and readily apparent on his own social media . His statement that "Argentina has already stolen enough territory from Chileans" was not an isolated comment, but rather the expression of a deeply held conviction. This message, posted in response to then-Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero regarding the map of the Argentine continental shelf, was accompanied by the hashtag #AntarcticaIsChilean , making it clear that his sovereignist vision is built in direct opposition to Argentine territorial interests.

The most worrying thing is that , unlike what happens with other politicians who moderate their discourse, Kast never deleted that tweet , keeping it as permanent evidence of his position.

This rhetoric is not improvised. Kast explicitly aligns himself with academics like Jorge Guzmán , who openly questions border treaties and promotes a jurisdictional—rather than diplomatic—solution to territorial disputes. Guzmán argues that Chile must avoid "becoming involved in a political settlement process (in which our best rights are always relativized)," a position that seeks to judicialize conflicts that have thus far been handled through bilateral dialogue. This perspective represents a direct threat to the stability of border relations and the delicate balance achieved through decades of diplomacy.

The warning from figures like former ambassador Rafael Bielsa , who called Kast "xenophobic" and noted that he had "displayed his anti-Argentine sentiment as a label," now takes on critical relevance. Bielsa was not exaggerating when he stated that he had "perfectly recorded, filed, read, and studied" Kast's anti-Argentine statements . These pronouncements constitute a pattern of behavior that transcends mere political rhetoric to become a position of principle .

Milei's enthusiasm for Kast's potential victory seems to deliberately ignore this fundamental aspect of his thinking. The celebration of a supposed ideological alignment masks the concrete risk that a Kast government would pose to Argentine sovereignty on multiple fronts : Patagonia, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the continental shelf, and especially Antarctica.

While Argentina needs to concentrate its efforts on the Malvinas claim, Kast's rise to power could force it to dedicate diplomatic and political resources to defending territories it believed to be firmly consolidated.

The relationship with Chile has always required careful and sophisticated handling, but the possibility of a government headed by Kast introduces a factor of unpredictability and confrontation that has not been seen since the Beagle Channel dispute.

Kast's historically anti-Argentine stance, far from being a mere anecdote, constitutes the core of his vision for the state and represents a direct challenge to Argentine territorial interests . Ignoring this reality out of ideological complacency would be a strategic error with unforeseeable consequences for national sovereignty.
