The deal of the century: Argentina paid 300 million for the F-16s that Romania acquired for 1 euro each

While Argentina committed a fortune, Romania —also a NATO member— finalized the transfer of 18 F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands for the symbolic price of 1 euro per aircraft.

Europe is parting ways with this fighter-bomber that Argentina acquired, in order to finance its transition to the F-35.

The arrival of the first six F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets in Argentina, specifically at the Río Cuarto Air Force Base in Las Higueras , Córdoba province, has been shrouded in official fanfare that omits crucial facts. The acquisition of these 24 aircraft from Denmark for $301.2 million is not only an expensive operation compared to similar NATO agreements, but it also places Argentina in a technological race it has already lost in the South Atlantic.

The "Romania Effect": 1 euro vs. 300 million

The international news is devastating . While Argentina committed a fortune, Romania —also a NATO member—finalized the transfer of 18 F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands for the symbolic price of 1 euro per aircraft .

Although the Romanian operation includes logistics and support costs of 21 million euros, the contrast shows that Europe is divesting itself of these systems to finance its transition to the F-35. For the Northern powers, the F-16 is now considered "discarded" equipment. In this context, the amount paid by Javier Milei's government seems more a gesture of political alignment with Washington than a genuine market opportunity .

Broken Wings: The damning Air Force report

Even with the aircraft on Cordoba soil, Argentina faces an operational capacity crisis. An internal report from the Argentine Air Force warns that "there is no technical capacity to maintain runways and hangars," describing obsolete machinery and equipment in poor condition.

"If we had all 24 planes, we could fly each one for two hours a year," a military source told La Política Online , emphasizing the lack of budget for basic maintenance.

This reality explains why Colombia rejected the purchase of these same aircraft in 2023, describing them as "second-hand" equipment with too short a useful life.

The unbridgeable gap: From the 4th to the 6th generation in the Malvinas

The analysis conducted by this publication a few days ago, following the arrival of the first six aircraft, focuses on the heart of the sovereignty dispute. The arrival of the F-16 does not alter the balance of power vis-à-vis the British occupation of the Malvina Islands; on the contrary, the asymmetry will deepen.

1.    The present (Eurofighter Typhoon): The Argentine F-16 is at a disadvantage from the start compared to the Typhoons at Mount Pleasant Air Base. The British aircraft has superior radars and the Meteor missile, which far surpasses the range of the AIM-120 AMRAAM authorized for Argentina.

2.    The immediate future (F-35): Before 2030, London plans to replace its Typhoons with the F-35 , a 5th generation fighter jet with stealth capabilities (invisible to radar) that would thwart any attempt to detect the F-16s.

3.    The 2035 horizon (Project Tempest): While Argentina incorporates technology from the 1980s, the United Kingdom is already developing the Tempest , a 6th generation fighter operated by Artificial Intelligence and capable of commanding swarms of drones.

Geopolitical conclusion

The purchase of the F-16s cements a relationship of absolute military dependence on the United States and, by extension, on the interests of NATO and Great Britain. By opting for this weaponry, Argentina subjects itself to the technological vetoes and spare parts availability dictated by Washington.

In short, the arrival of the F-16 restores supersonic flight for pilot training—a positive development for force morale—but it does so at an exorbitant price for a system that poses no real threat to British military strength. National defense remains subject to the will of the supplier and an internal infrastructure that, according to its own technicians, is currently in a critical state.
